What Are Complete Streets?

Since complete streets bills have been proposed to both the house and the assembly of New York State as well as The 2011 Complete Streets Act that was newly proposed to the US Senate I think it’s important to take a second and understand what a complete street actually is. In my usual fashion of not telling, but showing information here is a great video from StreetFilms.org that illustrates what a complete street is.

So now you know a little about the topic. What can you do to help? On the Tri-State Transportation Campaign’s website there is a petition that you can sign in favor of complete streets. It also has some information on why the complete streets bill is called Brittany’s Law.

Bicycle Fit Fits Into Number One

For everyone buying a bicycle there are a lot of factors to consider. What kind of bicycle do I need? What companies should I consider? Does it have everything I want? So what’s the most important question to ask? According to the Chicago Tribune it’s “How does it fit?”

Yes now that spring is upon us in full blast people will inevitably be visiting local bike shops and chain stores looking for a bike to ride this season, and according to Emily Furia, a senior editor at Bicycling magazine and editor of Bicycling’s Big Book of Cycling “The fit is more important than the brand or the type of bicycle.” I tend to agree with her.

Down at the bike rescue, yes I serve two masters, we ask people what kind of riding they do to assess what bike will fit their needs best. I won’t however send someone out of our doors with a bike that does not fit them. I would rather someone have a bike that kind of fits their needs then one that does not fit their knees. Even if we will get money out of the deal if they are hurting because the frame is too big or too small for them they are not going to have fun and probably abandon the bicycle.

So anyway if you are buying a bicycle this season go for fit. Hell, if you can find one you like too that fits you just fine go for that. You will be happier in the long run.

Yoga Time Anyone?

After an abysmal showing of trying to touch my toes while Ken, Toni, and Patrick (my roommate) showed me how it’s done I have decided to see what I can do in becoming more flexible. If my dream of riding a road bike one day will ever come true I need to be able to bend. It was then that life threw me an easy one.

I started following this blog recently called the London Cyclists Blog, all hail the mother country, which recently posted an article on bicycle specific yoga. This two part series illustrates a number of stretches that work the muscles and joints specific to cycling. If Lance Armstrong can do it so can I.

You Can’t Help But Chuckle A Little

Here’s an interesting video. The guy had 36 bikes stolen in a 27 year period. Bike theft is nothing to laugh about, but you can’t help but chuckle over the situation.

The Office Of Energy And Sustainability

Recently we got an email from a member of the Office of Energy and Sustainability asking us to link their site to ours. I love when we can come together, internet or otherwise, and proceed on to one common goal. So now if you visit our Links page you will see a new link to the Office of Energy and Sustainability‘s site as well as a link for Broadway Bicycle Co.

Being the one man web crawler that I am this meant I had to check out their site. I found an interesting page detailing things people can do right now to affect change to help the environment. One item in particular caught my eye:

Walk or bike

Transportation accounts for more than 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Walking or biking eliminates transportation-related emissions and helps you keep healthy, too! If you must drive, commit to driving as few miles as possible and always keep your car well-maintained (this includes making sure your tires are adequately inflated).”

So I hope this is not the last we hear from this office, and I hope we can collaborate in the future.
