What Are Complete Streets?

Since complete streets bills have been proposed to both the house and the assembly of New York State as well as The 2011 Complete Streets Act that was newly proposed to the US Senate I think it’s important to take a second and understand what a complete street actually is. In my usual fashion of not telling, but showing information here is a great video from StreetFilms.org that illustrates what a complete street is.

So now you know a little about the topic. What can you do to help? On the Tri-State Transportation Campaign’s website there is a petition that you can sign in favor of complete streets. It also has some information on why the complete streets bill is called Brittany’s Law.

New Commuter Helmet From Bell

I was going over my rss feed that keeps me up on cycling news when I came across an interesting item from bell. The Bell Muni and lady’s Arella are two helmets new to bell’s lineup focusing on commuting. They have a few nice features that do not come standard to most helmets.

First of all they have mounts where you can put bike lights on the front, rear, and rear straps of the helmet. I have been searching for a while as to how I can get ligths on my helmet and so far I have not come up with any good options. This is the first helmet where I see that they took that into account when designing the life saving device.

Second there is a nice strap system that I know I would want for my next helmet. Have you ever had a day where it is raining or cold so you throw on a hat and have to adjust your helmet accordingly? Now with their “one step fit system” it is a lot easier since the back strap is made of velcro and the neck strap gives you more room either way to adjust the helmet for hat or non hat heads.

Here are some videos that will give you a nice look of the products:

Make Bike Basics

As per yesterday’s post I would like to go over some of the basics of riding a bike because I think all of us need a refresher once in a while, but who wants to listen to me preach the good word of responsibility and safety? Thank god for the good people at Make Magazine. For all of you that are not familiar with the magazine Make is a place for Do It Yourself enthusiasts to learn and share projects to further the DIY revolution. What can be more DIY then bikes?

Recently they did an episode which they dedicated to bicycles. They came out with a really nice video entitled “Bike Basics on Make: Live ep06” in which they go over pretty much everything you need to know about bicycles besides for road rules. So without further ado here is the video.

The Organization You Never Knew Existe

For fifteen years the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) has been comprised of some of America’s largest cities. What do they do you ask? “NACTO encourages the exchange of transportation ideas, insights, and practices among large US cities while fostering a cooperative approach to key national transportation issues.” Basically they see trends and share ideas to make our cities more friendly to car-less transportation.

Honestly I would like to see more of these organizations especially when it comes to bicycle coalitions. I feel like we are all reinventing the wheel when it comes to what we do. ABC has met with NYBC in the past to coordinate on things together. So who it it up to? Is it up to each local group to reach out to other advocacy groups? Is it up to groups like NYBC to bring all of the smaller groups together? Should the League of American Bicyclists be responsible for coordinating this interchange of ideas? That is for other people to decide I guess.

Anyway, here is a short video to tell what NACTO is all about:

Not a trailer’s Article

Well not directly anyway.

There have been a lot of articles about bike trailers recently so now let’s take a step back and watch a video about how communities are becoming less car dependent.
