Bike Racks For Better Business

EVERYBODY LISTEN! Stop what you are doing and pay attention. We only have three days to get this done.

Apparently the CDTA is giving local businesses the chance to get bike racks half price. The only catch is that they only have 3 days to fill out an application. That leaves it up to you to get them informed and signed up. So what you need to do now is call, e-mail, or visit the places you visit frequently that don’t have bike racks and have them sign up for the program. I can think of a few off hand:

Prof. Java’s

Hudson River Coffee House

Zombie Planet

Earthworld

Flights of Fantasy

Wallmart

Koles

Bro’s Tacos

Fresh Market ?

Honest Weight Food Co-op ?

That asian supermarket on Colvin

As you can see the list goes on and on.Here is the forms and guidelines that people will need to read and fill out to participate in the program:

Here is where I say, “Post a comment with the stores you want to see have bike racks,” but don’t. Use that energy to write e-mails or visit the stores in person. Alright 1, 2, 3, BREAK!

? is where I don’t know if they have bike racks or not.

Bike Registration: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Let’s try something new here. Close your eyes for a minuet. Now imagine a world where bicycles are no longer free to ride around. Where they must be registered and tagged like cars. On top of that you must pay a registration fee for all of your bicycles. Now open your eyes. Scary no? You might think that that was just in your imagination, but there is a bill proposed by a New York City Councilmen that does just that. Listen to this e-mail I received from Transportation Alternatives yesterday:

As reported by the NY Post, Councilmember Eric Ulrich wants to introduce a draconian anti-bicycling bill that would require all New Yorkers to register their bicycles. Councilmember Ulrich has made bicyclists a scapegoat. His proposal will stop people from riding bicycles and make bicycling less safe. We need your help to stop his plans.

Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bicycling proposal is an enormous waste of City resources and an attack against every New Yorker who owns a bike now or might ride in the future. Stand up to Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bike proposal now!

Why should people fund bike projects?

Every day we fight for influence, respect, and money for bikes, but why should people give us any of that? Is it worth it? Does bicycling really have a positive effect on the macro world that is not contained in our little corner of it? Luckly the good people at Bikes Belong are here to help?

To help advocates communicate the value of biking to federal policymakers, we developed a series of 10 case studies on U.S. bike facilities with success stories.

This project, titled “The Federal Investment in Bicycling: 10 Success Stories,” describes a geographically diverse group of bike facilities — ranging from bike lanes to singletrack trails –that were built at least in part with federal funding. It aims to pinpoint what federal spending in bicycling can buy, and show bicycling as a cost-effective investment.

What’s new at PeopleForBikes.org

Here at ABC we we would be remiss if we did not share with you news from outside the capital district. That is why we are proud to congratulate PeopleForBikes.org on reaching their goal of one-hundred fifty thousand signatures on their pledge to make bicycling fun, safe, and viable in America. What can you do to help? PeopleForBikes.org is here to provide some direction:

1. Ask (at least) one family member or friend to sign the Peopleforbikes.org pledge. If everyone on the list does this–and remember, the process is quick, easy and free–the number of Americans who have unified behind bicycling will immediately double to 300,000. Now that’s a group with significant clout!2. Visit the Peopleforbikes.org website and spend a couple minutes reading the blog, some of the thousands of great personal stories stories and photos, and our advice on getting involved locally to improve bicyclingin your community. Our website includes lots of simple, inspirational ideas.

3. Be ready to write a short email to your U.S. Representative that supports bicycling, and expresses your interest in seeing better bicycling conditions. We’ll tell you when you need to send it and don’t worry; we’ll help you compose a simple, effective message.

There is also a short video that explains their whole process by the director of PeopleForBikes.org Tim Blumenthal.
