Support the Cause: Madison Avenue Calming Common Council Meeting – 9/1/10, 6:00 PM, City Hall

Dear Cyclists,

It would be nice if we had some cyclists in the room at tonight presentation by the “Madison Avenue Calming Taskforce.”  You do not have to speak or ask questions.

However, if you do choose to speak, the following are some background points.  Of cause, your wealth of experience as a cyclist and an observer of bicycling would make for the best “testimony.”  Remember, these streets are yours just as much as they are those of motor vehicle operators, pedestrians, etc.  ABC has backed this plan since its inception.

If you e-mail me directyly, I can send you the Power Point we will present tonight.  (Too big to go through listserv.)  It has some info of which you may not be aware and might be helpful to you in your other work promoting bicycling.

Support the Cause: Help Albany Police Provide Kids Helmets

The Albany Police Department is seeking funds to help provide helmets to Albany children. Their goal is to raise enough to supply 1,000 helmets.

You can contribute by visiting the McDonald’s restaurant located at 391 Central Ave every Tuesday this September. 20% of all sales between 5PM and 8PM on Tuesdays will be donated to the helmet program.

McDonald’s will also be donating a bicycle that will be raffled off in the restaurant. Tickets are $1 each. Winner will be picked on Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00PM.

Directions to the location.

Editor’s Note: We’re currently looking into the best way to donate directly to the program and will update this post shortly.

Support the Cause: Letters for a Complete Street

Dear Cyclists and Wannabes,

S5711B – the stalled Senate bill calling for a “complete streets” approach to road design in New York State needs your help.  The bill has been sitting in the transportation committee since May 2010.  It passed the Assembly.

I hope you will check out the bill at http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S5711A.  Then, write a letter (sample attached) or send an e-mail urging the Senators to (1) get the bill out of committee and (2) approve it on the Senate floor.

Note to PHNA-ers – I wrapped Madison Ave. into the letter, so it’ll be an easy edit for you!  With Complete Streets in law, the MAC will be reinforced as the right way to go!

Pushing Papers: Cyclist Gets Ticketed in Closed Trail

Here’s an interesting article from the Times Union about a cyclist who got ticketed for going down a closed trail. I can defiantly relate because I know I have done things on my bike that I could have been ticketed for. The interesting this is not that he got the ticked, but who he got the ticket from. Her’s an excerpt from the article:

“He rode his bike down to the Stockade section of Schenectady and then he returned.

On his way back, State Police were on the trail and asked for his identification, which Momrow provided. One trooper asked what he was doing there and if he knew the trail was closed. “The other guy said ‘That’s $150,'” Momrow said.”
