2012 Bike EXPO

Did you hear? There is a Bike EXPO taking place in Albany on May 6th? And it’s FREE!

Wow, am I excited!

There is going to be so much to do. You can meet local riders, shops, and teams; participate in a ride, win prizes, or get your bike checked while you gobble down great food! I mean really great food! There will be two rides.

One ride will show off Albany’s in-city bicycle amenities and the other family friendly ride will be lead by League of American Cyclists!

I know there will be lots of bikes to check out, so make sure you bring your best ride. I’ll be on my Greg Lemond Zurich!

The event will take place on May 6th between the hours of 10am and 4pm at the Washington Park Lakehouse. Lets hope for sunshine!

This event is sponsored in part by the New York Bicycling Coalition, the Albany Bicycle Rescue, the Pine Hills Neighborhood Association, the Delaware Area Neighborhood Association, and the Council of Albany Neighborhood Association.

Bicycle Amenities in Burlington, VT

Cruising around the streets of Burlington a few weekends ago, we spotted these interesting city-installed bi

cycle amenities:

  •  One of several “take back the streets” bicycle parking racks which occupies the same space as one standard motor vehicle parking place.  As shown, the bicycle is completely sheltered by the rack and is not locked up on the sidewalk.  In a bicycle-heavy, tightly packed city with narrow sidewalks like Burlington, off-the-sidewalk bicycle parking is a real benefit.  (Curiously, a scooter operator took advantage of this rack.)
  • A share- the-road sign that really communicates to both cyclists and motor vehicle operators.

Beginners Road Cycling Clinic, April 1st

Thought I’d share something from Jay Holiek’s Bike Blog.

Due to the number of new cyclists and triathletes in our area who have
expressed interest in road racing, the Mission in Motion Cycling team is
offering a beginners clinic to introduce riders to the sport of road
racing. The clinic will cover basic safety skills while riding in groups,
proper bike handling skills, pace lining and what to expect for your very
first road race.

To register, please visit https://www.bikereg.com/Net/15633

This Clinic is sponsored by a grant from the New York State Bicycle Racing
Association
(NYSBRA). The first 20 riders to pre-register on
bikereg.com can use the coupon code “NYSBRA” to receive a FREE entry to
the clinic and your one-day license fee will be paid by NYSBRA. The clinic will be hosted
by former professional rider Mike Jones and the groups will be co-hosted by
local racer and USA cycling camp attendee, Vanessa McCaffery along with
local racer, Mike Grygus. We are looking for a few more volunteers to ride
along in the group and provide input to the new riders.

For more information, please contact Mission in Motion Cycling Team,

Keep Riding! The weather has been great for it!

Neighborhood Associations Endorse Bike EXPO 2012

The Bike EXPO 2012 organizers were rewarded with two recent, significant events in Albany.

Bike Expo 2011

Bike Expo 2011

On March 7, 2012, the Council of Albany Neighborhood Associations (CANA), which is made up of representatives from all the neighborhood associations, showed its support for Bike EXPO 2012 by making a cash award to help finance the event.  The next evening, Delaware Area Neighborhood Association (DANA), stepped up with a matching grant.

At the CANA meeting, we had many comments, questions, and applause.  Fortuitously, our presentation followed that of the evening’s key speaker, President of the Albany Common Council, the Honorable Carolyn McLaughlin.  Many of the visions she outlined for the city were supported immediately afterward by our description of the Bike Expo (community building, neighborhood growth, reduction in parking issues, etc.).

Albany Bicycle Coalition is extremely grateful to both organizations – first for providing time at their meetings for us to tell our story and, second, for their generous support.

Bicycle Expo 2012 – Coming Soon!

The Albany Bicycle Coalition is moving ahead with Bicycle Expo 2012– your opportunity to meet with fellow cyclists, learn about new equipment, and explore sustainable/urban living!

ABC Information/Sign-In Booth – Bike Expo 2011

ABC Information/Sign-In Booth – Bike Expo 2011

We now have verbal approval from Albany to use the area in front of the Washington Park Lake House just off Madison Avenue at New Scotland Ave.

  • Date – Sunday, May 6, 10 AM – 4 PM
  • Location – Lake House in Washington Park
  • Rides – An in-city tour of Albany’s bicycle amenities and an in-park ride for novice cyclists and children.
  • VendorsWe will have bicycle groups, bicycle shops, food vendors, and other organizations related to bicycling and urban living.

With this great, central location, we are hoping to attract cyclists, vendors, exhibitors, and visitors to the park – which will be in full bloom for the Tulip Festival (May 12 and 13).  We will have access to the car-free roadways for a family friendly traffic skills ride.

This event will be Albany Bicycle Coalition’s main sponsored effort for 2012 and for Bike Month 2012 – a chance to bring riders and families into contact with each other and with organizations and companies involved with cycling and sustainable living.
