Something New?
This “cargo bicycle” was parked in front of the campus center at the College of St. Rose on April 9, 2013. Is this a first in the area?

See What’s Comin’ with the Sunlite Deluxe 11.5″ Bicycle Mirror
Want a great mirror for your upright “city bicycle”?
With a little tweaking, the Sunlite Deluxe will fill the bill. You can order through Amazon or directly from the retailer, Bicycle Source US.
Through Amazon, the mirror was $11.99 with free shipping (Feb 2, 2013) whereas the retailer offers chrome or black at $17.99 (+ $6.95 shipping) (April 8, 2013).
It was not available per my preference at local bicycle shops with which I checked.
This is s high quality product and installation is straightforward. The 11.5” arm is practical and the 3.5 X 5” mirror face is the biggest I have ever seen.
In my bicycle’s case, I had to bend the arm somewhat to get a better view around my left arm.
Protecting the threads with 2.5” of snugly fitting of 9/16” o.d. Tygon hose, I clamped the threads in a BIG vise and bent the arm with a BIG wrench cushioned by a double fold of heavy cardboard. This is a trail-and-error project, and I may have to do another bending session.

Another Cyclist Run Down by an “Impaired” Driver
The Times Union reported today that another cyclist has died. Matthew Ratelle was struck down from behind about 8:30 a.m. (broad daylight) on 9/3. According to the report, one can conclude that Ratelle was an “avid cyclist” who had driven to the start of his ride on Rt. 22, was wearing a helmet, was riding on the shoulder, and had a GPS device on his bicycle – all hardly signs of a casual or unprepared rider going on an errand.
According to the Times Union, the killer, Becky Goodermote, was charged with::
- Leaving the scene of a serious personal injury accident
- Operating a vehicle while impaired by drug
- Driving with a suspended registration
- Failure to use due care
The TU report notes further that Goodermote, who was also suspected of texting at the time, left the scene but was caught when her concerned family member told police that Goodermote returned home with extensive damage to her vehicle that she could not explain.
Ratelle, who leaves a wife and three young children, landed about 30 yards from where he was struck and suffered massive trauma.
