Velocio’s 7 Commandments for the Wise Cyclist

Paul de Vivie (1853-1930), who wrote as ‘Velocio’, was an early advocate of the bicycle, supposed inventor of the derailleur and the father of French cycle touring.  Here are his seven commandments for the wise cyclist:

1. Keep your stops short and few.

2. Eat before you’re hungry, drink before you’re thirsty.

3. Never get too tired to eat or sleep.

4. Add a layer before you’re cold, take one off before you’re hot.

5. Lay off wine, meat and tobacco on tour.

6. Ride within yourself, especially in the first hour.

7. Never show off.

Bicycling Is Not Just Bicycling

I love when people do the leg work for me.

In an article by Stacey Moses she outline why bicycling can save your life, or at least extend it a little. We all know this, some more then others, but it bears repeating because we don’t say it enough. We get caught up in the politics of it all. What can we do to make the roads better? How can we get more people to ride bikes? The simple fact of the matter is that Bicycling is good for your health, plain and simple. So read and enjoy the fact that you will be healthier in the long run, ummm… bike.

Bike Registration: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Let’s try something new here. Close your eyes for a minuet. Now imagine a world where bicycles are no longer free to ride around. Where they must be registered and tagged like cars. On top of that you must pay a registration fee for all of your bicycles. Now open your eyes. Scary no? You might think that that was just in your imagination, but there is a bill proposed by a New York City Councilmen that does just that. Listen to this e-mail I received from Transportation Alternatives yesterday:

As reported by the NY Post, Councilmember Eric Ulrich wants to introduce a draconian anti-bicycling bill that would require all New Yorkers to register their bicycles. Councilmember Ulrich has made bicyclists a scapegoat. His proposal will stop people from riding bicycles and make bicycling less safe. We need your help to stop his plans.

Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bicycling proposal is an enormous waste of City resources and an attack against every New Yorker who owns a bike now or might ride in the future. Stand up to Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bike proposal now!
