What’s happening at the Albany Bike Rescue?

What’s that? You want to know about the Albany Bike Rescue (ABR)? Let me see if I can dig something up.

Recently we received a bunch of children’s bikes which we have been fixing up. This one was a wooden tricycle that was poorly welded so our mechanics sawed off the bad part and ingeniously put the stem back together. Continue reading

No Club is an Island

ABC Joins the League of American Bicyclists

1-3-11

The Albany Bicycle Coalition recently joined with more than 750 bicycle clubs that make up the national network of League of American Bicyclists-affiliated clubs.

The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) was founded in 1880 as the League of American Wheelmen.  Riders of that era were challenged by rutted roads of gravel and dirt and faced antagonism from equestrians, wagon drivers, and pedestrians.  In an effort to improve riding conditions so they might better enjoy their newly discovered sport, more than 100,000 cyclists from across the United States joined the League to advocate for paved roads.  Thus, motor vehicle drivers of today can thank the bicyclists of long ago for the nation’s network of paved roads.  Many of the breakthroughs for women – in terms of attire and independent mobility – came about through the bicycling craze of the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Visit the League of American Bicyclists’s website at http://www.bikeleague.org/.

Amongst other benefits to ABC are the following:

–          Access to insurance coverage for general liability and special events

–          Free advertising in the “American Bicyclist Almanac” including one free advertisement for our signature cycling event, Bike Expo 2011

–          Individual League memberships at a reduced rate

–          Access to LAB assistance on a variety of topics such as tax-deductibility, incorporation, and local laws and ordinances

–          Assistance in developing education programs to meet the needs of the Capital Region

–          Networking via scheduled “Club Representative Conference Calls

–          Subscription to the “Cue Sheet,” LAB’s quarterly newsletter for bike clubs.

More importantly, Albany Bicycle Coalition’s affiliate status helps it promote and protect the rights of cyclists backed by a unified, national voice.

We hope that all riders and bicycle fans will be pleased to learn of another step forward by ABC!

The Power of the bell

This one comes from Ken.

Have you ever felt inadequacy because your bell was just not loud enough or just ignored all together? Well here is a story for you all the way from Germany about an American bicyclist who found his bell to be working better then he ever dreamed.

Bike bells or not. What do you think?

When do you know to buy your next bike?

Something I have been struggling with in the recent months is what do you do if you want a new bike? I bought a new Trek a few months ago and it is still kicking. Don’t get me wrong I love my bike. It has never let me down. I did get my folding bike Zippy because I wanted to take it on bus trips. That was because, I thought at least, that I needed it. So what now? A mountain, a cargo, a touring bike? Heck all I really want is an upgrade. Something to help me ride faster and longer then I have before while lightening the physical burden… electric? Heck I’ve even considered buying a Velomobile. So what do you think riders of America? When and why do you buy a new bike? Do you buy a new bike when you need one, or do you buy it when you want one? How do you justify your old one just sitting in your garage or basement. I feel  like this Trek is going to last me forever and I love and lament that fact. Especially because I am getting good at fixing and maintaining it. Thanks Mary Lou.

So what do you think? Honestly I need help. (In more ways then one.)

Oh, by the way this will make you feel good inside.

Because I Can

Being the sole writer for a blog gets lonely some times (And demanding all the time), but it does afford you some nice perks like being right all the time because there is no one to argue with you. Another one of these perks is getting to say whatever you want even if it does not pertain to bikes. So here goes:

Next weekend ABC will be having our monthly First Friday Ride in which we go around to different places around Albany and look at art by the local artists of the area. At the last Critical Mass, article approaching completion, we went to a coffee house called the Hudson River Coffee House which I must admit was pretty awesome and made a mean cup of joe. So here’s the big reveal. Don da da da da da daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, next Friday the Hudson River Coffee House is hosting Carpe Geekdom, an amalgamation of bands from NYC who play songs catering to all things nerd from Star Wars to this country’s greatest vampire hunter (Abraham Lincoln), at 9:00 pm. So be there, or have to listen to your friends talk about it the next day. I know I’ll be there if not just for the Turtles in Time machine.
