Bike Registration: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Let’s try something new here. Close your eyes for a minuet. Now imagine a world where bicycles are no longer free to ride around. Where they must be registered and tagged like cars. On top of that you must pay a registration fee for all of your bicycles. Now open your eyes. Scary no? You might think that that was just in your imagination, but there is a bill proposed by a New York City Councilmen that does just that. Listen to this e-mail I received from Transportation Alternatives yesterday:

As reported by the NY Post, Councilmember Eric Ulrich wants to introduce a draconian anti-bicycling bill that would require all New Yorkers to register their bicycles. Councilmember Ulrich has made bicyclists a scapegoat. His proposal will stop people from riding bicycles and make bicycling less safe. We need your help to stop his plans.

Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bicycling proposal is an enormous waste of City resources and an attack against every New Yorker who owns a bike now or might ride in the future. Stand up to Councilmember Ulrich’s anti-bike proposal now!

Velo-Commuting

I know we have had a lot of articles on Velomobiles recently, but this guy is just too interesting. He started on a road bike and gradually moved to a Velomobile. Now his commute to work is about 18 miles and he says that he can go 155 miles in a day. That would be awesome. Granted his environment supports this mode of transportation because it is not to hilly so it would not be a great idea for Albany, but he and 49 other Velomobile rider are doing a tour across America this summer so we’ll see how that goes.

Good Things and Recumbent Bikes

I was doing a little research today on recumbent bikes for various reasons and I came across an article on Velomobiles that I thought you’d all like. Give it a read and tell me what your thoughts are of recumbent bikes. I am very interested to hear what you guys think.

In other news the Albany Bicycle Coalition and the Albany Bike Rescue has some big stuff going on. I am not going to ruin the surprise right now, but be in store for somethings that will knock your socks off in the next few weeks.

Snow Emergency Over, Winter Not

At 8:00 AM this morning the winter weather emergency officially ended in Albany which means that all normal parking rules apply again. According to the Times Union, “The first night of the snow emergency netted over 150 towed cars.” At 185 Dollars a car plus any unpaid parking tickets that adds up to a pretty penny for the city. I wonder what they are going to do with the money? Do they budget for towing people or is this extra money that could go twords a public works program? *Cough* Madison Ave. *Cough*
