Yesterday, Aug. 16th, the Governor signed into law the Complete Streets bill “which requires state and local transportation agencies to explore designs that will make streets and roadways more accessible to pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. The law affects any project that receives both federal and state funds, making it subject to oversight by the state Department of Transportation.”

I am calling this one a win, or at least a step in the right direction. Although this legislation does not force anyone to do much of anything it does make it so that project managers have to at least consider the option when thinking about new projects. What does this mean for you? Not much of anything. What does it mean for the next generation? It means that they have a chance to grow up with roads that are not only geared towards cars. Where it is safe to walk and bike wherever you please.

Twenty-five years ago three bicyclists set out to cross America on bicycles. Starting in Buffalo, NY they got all the way to Texas when disaster struck, or rather a truck struck and hospitalized two of the three riders. Now, twenty-five years later they are finishing what they started and riding across America again starting at the same hospital where they were forced to end the trip the last time.

They will be passing through Albany tomorrow Aug. 18th which there will be a press event in Washington park at the Henry Johnson Blvd entrance at 3:00pm. Come and see the three men who never gave up on their dream.

Riding in the late summer can be tough. It’s hot. It’s humid. No arguments there. My strategy has been very simple.

• Wear light clothing. Light weight, light colors. If it dries quick, even better.
• A water bottle. I stop, a lot, in the shade, and drink some water.

The City of Albany posted some information about cooling stations and public pools. Nothing wrong to stopping in to catch your breath, wipe the sweat out of your eyes, and enjoy something cold to drink.
