The following people were killed or seriously injured on streets and roadways in the region. While not complete, the list reflects what the Albany Bicycle Coalition has on file. People on Bicycles

  1. Anaisabel Crespo-Leiva – 10/3/24 (age 27) Ms. Crespo-Leiva’s coworkers reported that a motor vehicle killed her in a crash with at 23rd St. and I-787, Watervliet while she was riding her bicycle. State Police reported her involved in the crash but provided few details.
  2. Joseph Crandall – 11-27-23 (age 62) At 11:30 in the morning, a 55-year-old pickup truck driver struck the cyclist from the rear and killed him on Central Ave., near Elmwood Ave., Colonie. Police noted that Crandall was wearing reflective clothing but not a helmet and stated that the driver was not impaired. There was no explanation of how this crash could even occur in daylight on a road with ample room to pass people on bicycles.
  3. Raymond McCabe – 10/9/23 (age 57) collided at 2:30 PM with a dump truck and died at the scene. Rt 378, Menands.
  4. Kelly J. Burke – 5/10/22 (age 53) A 73-year-old Fort Edward man driving a sedan struck and killed a rider on an e-bicycle. Rt. 254, Queensbury.
  5. Darlene McGraw – 2/7/22 (age UNK) Hit by motor vehicle, Rt. 146, Clifton Park. Suffered from a head injury that destroyed her helmet plus minor injuries.
  6. Elton Garvey – 11/13/21 (age 59), Killed by truck, Schenectady, State St.
  7. Deborah Carpenter – 9/1/21 (age 54) Life-threatening injuries by hit-and-run driver. The driver left the cyclist in a coma on Rt. 9 north, Latham. The victim was on her way home from work.
  8. Jeremy Williams – 9/21/21(age 39) Killed by motor vehicle, Central Ave., Town of Colonie.
  9. John Lynch – 7/21/21 (age 57) Killed by motor vehicle, Kingston.
  10. William Drake – 7/4/20 (age 16) Driver with suspended license hit bicyclist who was then hit by a second car, Rt. 30, Mayfield.
  11. Roger L. Sawyer – 10/19/17 (age 30) Bicyclist run down by SUV, Washington Ave. Ext., Albany.
  12. Edston J. Kirnon – 7/22/17 (age 42) Bicyclist collided with side of CDTA bus, N. Pearl St., Albany.
  13. John J. Cummings – 1/27/16 (age 65) Bicyclist run down from behind and killed, Amsterdam Rd., Glenville.
  14. Robert Agne, DVM – 9/7/15 (age 54) Bicyclist killed by sleeping driver crossed centerline, Rt. 30, Pawlet, VT.
  15. Joshua T. Santiago – 7/9/14 (age 14) Driver hit and killed cyclist who entered a 4-way intersection going the wrong way on a one-way street without stopping,12:44 AM. 19th St. and 4th Ave., Watervliet.
  16. Stephen Nolan – 6/2/14 (age 53) Driver killed cyclist, King & Federal Sts. Troy.
  17. Brian Bailey – 3/11/14 (age 37) Truck driver killed cyclist, Rt. 9W, Ravena.
  18. Justin M. Price – 8/23/13 (age 20) Bicyclist struck by rear wheel of tractor-trailer, Rt. 29, Saratoga Springs.
  19. Matthew Ratelle – 12/20/12 (age 40) Impaired driver killed cyclist by, Rt. 22, Hoosick Falls. Driver sentenced to 2⅓ to 7 years for her plea to leaving the scene of an accident that caused a death and 1⅓ to 4 years for criminally negligent homicide, both felonies.
  20. Paul J. Merges, Jr. – 11/24/12 (age 45) Bicyclist killed by drunk driver, Manning Blvd. & Roosevelt St., Albany. The hit-and-run driver ignored police cars chasing him from Albany to Rotterdam as he drunkenly sped away in his pick-up truck with the body of his victim tangled on the vehicle’s ladder rack. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder.
  21. Nicholas Richichi – 10/19/07 (age 53) Bicyclist killed by motor coach, Fuller Rd., Colonie.
  22. Eric M. Taylor – 7/2/07 (age 18) Hit by car (swerved into traffic), Rt. 197, Fort Edward.
  23. Diva De Loayza – 6/6/07 (age 40) Bicyclist killed by car, Western Ave. at Homestead Ave., Albany.
  24. Alan R. Fairbanks – 10/29/06 (age 72) Bicyclist hit by car/died, Rt. 5-S at bicycle path, Rotterdam.
  25. Jose Perez – 8/3/06 (age 60) Bicyclist killed by SUV, Broadway at Quay St., Albany.
  26. Joel Melnikoff – 7/3/06 (age 49) Bicyclist killed by drunk driver, Rt. 32, Bethlehem.
  27. Mary Morgan – 3/9/04 (age 31) At 1:30 PM, Karla Tribley struck and killed cyclist with her car. Central Ave. at the intersection with Berwyn St., Colonie. The driver, 59 of Schenectady, was not hurt and was not issued any summonses.
  28. David Ryan – 6/29/04 (age 32) Bicyclist killed by reckless and speeding driver, Riverview Rd., Rexford.
  29. Bill Page – 8/2/04 (age 79) Hit by car (swerved into traffic – tire blowout?) Rt. 9, Saratoga County.
  30. Larry Finkle – 11/17/01 (age 54) Hit by a drunk driver in the dark, while crossing Rt. 9, Malta.
  31. Robert F. Zayhowski – July 16, 2000 (age 43) Drunk SUV driver killed cyclist, Rt. 66, at Glass Lake Rd., Sand Lake
  32. James V. Percent – 8/19/98 (age 50) Killed in head-on collision with a city trash collection truck, Albany.
  33. Joseph Raymond Hebert – 8/22/97 (age unknown) Rode into path of tractor-trailer, Glens Falls.
  34. Thomas Van Patten – 6/12/97 (age 71) Rode into path of a car, Rt. 9, Schodack.
  35. Andrew Spiller – 7/7/92 (age 26 of Rochester) Participating in an endurance bicycle race when hit around 1:00 AM by 18-year-old drunk driver Jason Lamphere, Rt. 29A, Town of Stratford. Woman who provided beer to Lamphere (who also died) later charged with unlawfully dealing with a child.
  36. Albert Lester – 6/7/92 (age 31 of Westwood, Mass) Participating in the above race when hit around 2:00 AM by drunk driver Gerald S. Hill, Jr., 18. County Rd. 119, Town of Ephratah. Hill was later sentenced to 1-1/3 to 4 years in prison. Denied parole in 1994. The owner of the market where Hill bought beer that night was charged with unlawfully dealing with a child. (This was the second year for the endurance race, but it was never held again after the two deaths.)
  37. Donald Conklin – 6/15/90 (age 22) Hit by a car while riding through a parking lot off Rt. 9, Hudson.
  38. Edward Sinclair – 6/11/87 (age 25 of Schenectady) Hit by a car after riding through a stop sign, Vrooman Ave. and E. Main St., Amsterdam.
  39. Andrew W. Hummel – 3/24/87 (age 22 of Latham) Hit by a car on Rt. 9, Colonie. No one was charged, but it appears the driver was at fault.
  40. Robert Palmer – 9/6/86 (age 14) Hit by drunk driver, Rt. 50, Ballston Spa. Driver Randy L. Hotaling was later sentenced to 1-1/3 to 4 years in prison. (Same event as D. West.)
  41. David R. West – 9/6/86 (age 16) Hit by drunk driver, Rt. 50, Ballston Spa. Driver Randy L. Hotaling was later sentenced to 1-1/3 to 4 years in prison. (Same event as R. Palmer.)
  42. Vicki A. Spezio – 7/4/86 (age 13) Hit by drunk driver while trying to cross Central Ave., Colonie on her bike. The driver Charles P. Wells was later sentenced to 60 days in prison and a three-year probation (the jury blamed the cyclist).

Pedestrians

  1. Felipa Martinez-Garcia – 4/7/25 (age 49) – A car driver killed a pedestrian on her way to work on Route 9, Latham between Latham Farms and the Rt 2 traffic circle at 5:00 AM Monday, 4/7/25.
  2. Zion Delaney – 3/19/25 (age 8). Hit-and-run driver Conroy Simpson killed a young boy on Crane St. Schenectady, at 7:37 PM Wednesday, 3/19/25 with his 2018 Jeep Cherokee. Police charged the perpetrator with felony fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. A judge set bail at $250,000. He was also ticketed for no vehicle insurance.
  3. Migdalia Aulet – 3/14/25 (age 58) – Hit-and-run driver Heath R. Mabeus, 37, killed a female pedestrian who was crossing Wolf Rd. near Beltrone Dr., Colonie, at 6:30 AM Friday, 3/24/25. Police charged the perpetrator with “felony leaving the scene of an accident (sic.).” The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.
  4. Angela Fisher-Reid – 2/25/25 (age 59) – A car driver struck and killed the pedestrian as she attempted to cross 4-lane, 40-mph Rt. 7 at Hickory Rd., Niskayuna at 2:44 PM. This is just one year since a driver killed 14-year-old boy and three years since a later-imprisoned (“reckless driving”) driver killed a 55-year-old women all at the same spot. The town is studying the intersection.
  5. Patricia Peterkin – 2/13/25 (age 63) A dump truck killed the victim on Central Ave. Albany at the Colvin Ave. intersection around 10:00 AM. This heavily trafficked portion of Central Ave., with many pedestrians crossing, is not included in the recent city speed limit reduction to 25 mph. The victim was crossing Central Ave. The Times Union reports were inconsistent (2/13, 2/14, and 2/19) as to whether the victim was crossing Central Ave. or walking south (south-west) in Central Ave.
  6. Daquan Phillips – 10/31/24 (age 28) A driver intentionally drove into Phillips on the sidewalk at Manning Blvd. and Lark St., Albany. The driver who hit and killed the pedestrian was charged with a crime and sent to Albany County Jail. This case demonstrates that motor vehicles are deadly weapons and that drivers, vulnerable road users, law enforcement, traffic engineers, and law makers need to treat them as such.
  7. Jason Steinberg – 10/6/24 (age 50) Albany Police Department said Steinberg was walking on the sidewalk at Bender Ave. and Krumkill Rd. at 6:55 AM when a driver crossed the westbound lane and drove onto the sidewalk, hitting and killing Steinberg at the scene.
  8. Unknown Pedestrian – 5/29/24 (age 64) Washington Ave. and Quail St. Around 1:15 AM, a vehicle struck a person. Preliminarily, the victim was lying in the roadway prior to being struck. The victim was conscious but died at the scene. Times Union, 5/30/24, Pg C2.
  9. Unidentified Pedestrian – 1/16/24 (age unknown) A motor vehicle operator critically injured a pedestrian at the intersection of Union St. and Seward Pl., Schenectady at 5:40 PM just as the day’s snowstorm was tapering off.
  10. Unidentified Pedestrian – 12/22/23 (age 74) A motor vehicle operator struck and killed a woman who was found in the roadway near 104 Watervliet Avenue Extension at 5:55 PM. The woman’s roadway death was the second within two days in Albany (see also 12/2O/23). The City of Albany’s response was to install temporary electronic signs two of which read “MOTORISTS DRIVE SAFELY” and “PEDESTRIANS WALK SMART.”
  11. Unidentified Pedestrian – 12/20/23 (age 53) – A car driver struck and killed a woman who was walking across the road near 1389 Washington Ave. and the University at Albany at 5:15 PM. This is a 30-mph zone. The woman’s roadway death was the second within two days in Albany (see also 12/22/23). The City of Albany’s response was to install temporary electronic signs two of which read “MOTORISTS DRIVE SAFELY” and “PEDESTRIANS WALK SMART.”
  12. Unidentified Pedestrian – 12/18/23 (age 15) A motor vehicle operator, age 29, of Rotterdam, was arrested for leaving the scene of a serious personal injury crash, a felony, and a violation for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. While headed south, he struck a 15-year-old pedestrian on Route 7 (Troy-Schenectady Rd.) at 5:09 AM at the intersection of Albany St.
  13. Mark Schimmer – 11/21/23 (age 67) A 33-year-old motor vehicle driver struck and killed a pedestrian at 6:03 PM on Central Ave. at Mountain View Ave., Colonie. Police said the pedestrian was pushing a shopping cart, was in dark clothing, and not near a crosswalk or traffic signal at the time. Rain and snow may have made visibility poor. The driver maintained that she did not see the pedestrian until after the collision. Police held that neither speeding nor intoxication were involved, and the driver was not charged.
  14. David Herskind – 11/11/23 (age 49) Just before midnight, the driver of a Ford F-150 going west on Central Avenue killed a pedestrian at the Fuller Rd. intersection, Colonie. Police stated that neither speed nor driver impairment appeared to be factors in the crash. The pedestrian was in the motor vehicle travel lane at the time of the crash. It was the second time in a day that a pedestrian was killed by a vehicle in the town (See also Timothy Smith, 11/12/23.)
  15. Timothy Smith – 11/12/23 (age 62) – A 23-year-old woman from Colonie, on her way home, was driving eastbound on Rt. 7 near British American Blvd., Colonie where she struck and killed Smith at 11:44 PM when he stepped off the curb in front of her. Police said that excessive speed or driver impairment did not appear to play a role in the crash. It was the second time in a day that a pedestrian was killed by a vehicle in the town (See also David Herskind, 11/11/23.)
  16. Unidentified Pedestrian – 11/8/23 (age 67) Two cars hit and killed the victim near Exit 2 on southbound I-787 in Albany. The man was struck by one car as the vehicle tried to merge into traffic at 7:16 PM. State Police said the driver was initially unaware the vehicle had hit someone. The man was then struck by a second vehicle and died at the scene.
  17. Noella Boucher 3/26/23 (age 82) – At 10:14 PM near the Exit 1, I -787, a car driver killed a woman who ran into the road. The victim, from Canada, was trying to get her dog from the road when they were both fatally struck. State Police said the driver of the vehicle cooperated with the investigation and is not expected to face charges.
  18. Larry Cunningham – 10/24/22 (age 62) A drunken car driver struck and killed pedestrian on a sidewalk near the intersection of 3rd Ave. and Elizabeth St. Albany. Driver Jose Guevara-Bonilla, a 26-year-old city man was charged with aggravated drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident and other offences. Police issued several tickets and said more charges are possible.
  19. Pernell Compston – 10/6/22 Police say Compston was hit by an SUV and a pickup truck just after 10 pm when he was crossing the street near the intersection of Northern Blvd. and Shaker Rd., Albany.
  20. Tanisha Brathwaite – 9/14/22 (age 31) Drunk driver killed pedestrian Hit and run driver struck and killed pedestrian at 6:00 PM on Clinton Ave. at the intersection with Henry Johnson Blvd., Albany. Driver sentenced to 8 to 24 years for aggravated vehicular homicide and several DWI counts.
  21. Kathleen McBride – 7/7/22 (age 52) Van struck and killed a pedestrian on Central Ave.
  22. Kelly J. Burke – 5/10/22 (age 53) A 73-year-old Fort Edward man driving a sedan struck and killed a rider on an e-bicycle. Rt. 254, Queensbury.
  23. Harold M. Townsend – 3/25/22 (age 72) Unidentified 20-year-old female drove Honda Civic from the southbound lane to the northbound lane and killed one pedestrian and seriously injured another. 1:30 PM. Hop City Rd., Ballston.
  24. Janet L. Townsend – 3/25/22 (age 71) [same event as H. Townsend.] Airlifted to hospital in serious condition.
  25. Daniel Minehan – 3/20/22 (age 75) A known but unidentified car diver struck and killed a pedestrian who was crossing Rt 2 – Troy/Schenectady Rd., Latham, Colonie, at 7:45 PM at Swatling Rd. where there are crosswalks. See also here.
  26. Brinley R. Zolle – 3/11/22 (age 16) On-duty Sate Police investigator Danielle Keating struck and injured student walking to high school, Ballston Ave., Ballston Spa.
  27. Nicholas Montello – 3/1/22 (age 19) Unreported but identified female driver killed pedestrian working on County Rd. 16, Times Union 3/3/22.
  28. Paul Trombley – 2/26/22 (age 67) Unreported but identified male hit-and-run driver killed pedestrian who was walking on Main St., South Glens Falls. Times Union 3/3/22.
  29. Nina Dever – 2/6/22 (age 71), killed by hit-and-run motor vehicle driver, Broad St. at South Western Ave, Glens Falls.
  30. David Madden – 1/24/22 (age 31), Hit by a car at 1935 Central Ave., Town of Colonie. Rendered unconscious and in critical condition. See also here.
  31. Joseph D. Badger – 12/27/21 (age 30), Killed by a truck, State Route 32 and 4, Halfmoon. 
  32. Randall Schanz – 11/21/21 (age 32) Pedestrian killed by truck, Rt. 9 Traffic Circle south bound ramp, Latham.
  33. Jen Hebner – 8/23/21 (age 47), Pedestrian/jogger severely injured by hit-and-run truck driver Kenwood Ave., Bethlehem.
  34. Unidentified Pedestrian – 5/6/2021. Per the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System, a 59-year-old male pedestrian was killed on Watervliet Avenue when a sedan traveling northbound on Watervliet Ave. passed a car, on the right colliding with a parked car which struck the victim.
  35. Sa’Nya Blaylock – 4/15/21 (age 16) Student at Albany High School was killed by a motor vehicle while crossing to the bus stop after her shift at Kentucky Fried Chicken on 1235 Central Ave. Colonie.
  36.   37. Randall Schanz – 11/21/21 (age 32) A pickup truck driver killed the pedestrian as he was walking home from work on Loudon Rd, Rt 9, up the southbound ramp that leads to the Latham traffic circle, Town of Colonie.
  38. Unidentified Pedestrian – 9/24/20 (age unknown) A pedestrian was killed in a collision between 7 and 8 pm on Church St. Albany. This was not at an intersection, there was no drunk driving involved, the weather was clear but dark.
  39. Richard Harmon – 5/21/20 (age 76) Pedestrian hit and killed at North Allen St. and Manning Blvd. [Times Union, Saturday, 5/23/20, pg. D3]
  40. Unidentified Pedestrian – 9/24/19 (age 50) A car driver going west on Washington Ave. Extension hit and killed a male pedestrian who apparently tried to cross the street in the evening. [Times Union, 9/26/19, Section: Obituaries, pg. C5]
  41. Unidentified Pedestrian – 8/8/2019 (age 67) Around 1 PM, a truck driver struck and seriously injured a pedestrian near the intersection of Madison Ave. and Dove St. After treatment at the scene, rescuers took the man to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he later died. [Times Union, 8/9/19, pg. C4. The Federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) lists this a pedestrian death]
  42. Ludmilla Vink – 2/20/18 (age 92) Pedestrian, was identified as the victim in the fatal car-pedestrian crash on Washington Ave., Albany. [Times Union Thursday, February 22, 2018, pg. C2]
  43. Rajine Martinez 2/4/17 (age 21) Killed by hit-and-run SUV driver, Washington Park Rd. near New Scotland Ave.
  44. Gregory Abram-Skinner – 12/23/16 (age 21) At 7:00-8:00 PM on Washington Ave. Ext. at Springsteen Ave., Albany, a drunk driver struck and killed the victim.
  45. Ashiqur Rahman – 12/2015 (age 4) The driver of a refuse truck struck the victim at 8:00-9:00 AM on Central Ave. at Quail St., Albany as he was crossing in the crosswalk, holding his mother’s hand, and walking with the pedestrian light.
  46. Raymond E. Mosall – 11/21/14 (age 66) Killed by hit-and-run driver on Wilkins Ave., Colonie.
  47. Nyla Jordan – 12/10/14 (age 53) Driver killed pedestrian while she crossed I-787 at Dyke Ave., Cohoes.
  48. Violet B. Graham – 11/6/14 (age 87) Driver killed pedestrian on Rt. 32, Broadway, Colonie.
  49. Angelo J. Delduce Jr. – 11/5/14 (age 72) Killed when he stepped out of car on the Northway/I-87, Colonie.
  50. Kyle Canabush – 7/3/14 (age 29) Pickup truck driver killed pedestrian who was crossing Central Ave. at Kraft Ave., Colonie.
  51. Jon V. Genre – 5/14/14 (age 26) Killed when he got out of his car on the Thruway/I-87, in Albany.
  52. Qazir Sutherland – 6/15/13 (age 7) The car driver, 37, of Albany, was traveling north in her sedan on S. Pearl, Albany and struck the victim as he was crossing the street to meet his mother. The driver was not charged.
  53. Katherine Parker – 2/21/13 (age 28) At 10:22 PM a minivan driver heading west struck the victim on Central Ave. at King Ave., Albany. The victim was walking north to cross Central Ave.
