Battenkill needs you!

The Tour of the Battenkill is fast approaching in April. The Professional/Amateur event on Saturday, April 10th is the largest cycling race in the USA with more than 2,200 racers expected. The cover of the Jan./Feb. 2010 issue of Bicycling magazine featured the Tour of the Battenkill, calling it the “America’s Greatest Ride”, with photos from the 2009 event. Racers compete over a rugged, 62-mile course in upstate New York’s Battenkill Valley.

The complete Tour of the Battenkill schedule also includes:
* Ride2Recovery event Saturday, April 17 – A benefit ride for wounded war veterans.
* “Pro Invitational” for about 200 cyclists on professional teams on Sunday, April 18, representing the USA, Great Britain, Australia and Canada. (124 miles)

The professional cycling event on April 18th is part of the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) America’s Tour. Also check out the recent cyclingnews.com article.

More than 350 energetic and enthusiastic volunteers (road marshals and drivers) are needed, primarily for the Saturday, 4/10 Pro/Am and the Sunday, 4/18 Pro Invite, with a few volunteers needed for the 4/17 Ride2Recovery. The time commitment on Saturday, April 10, will be about 5-7 hours and for Sunday, April 18th, either one or two 2 hour shifts.

Volunteers will receive an event t-shirt, appropriate training & materials, and an invitation to dinner with the pro cyclists and the race sponsors! In addition, for every 10 volunteers provided by civic groups and not-for-profit organizations (i.e., school sports teams, scout pacts, book clubs, etc.), a $100 donation will be made to the group for each day that their group volunteers. Please fill out the form at:

Critical Mass was cold!

Frank, Ouliana, and I were the only three brave enough to make it out for Critical Mass. We took Henry Johnson to Clinton, Clinton to North Pearl, North Pearl to Pine, and Pine to Washington. Here is a map of our route. The wind and cold were conspiring against us, and I have to admit I walked my bike up Pine. I hope the next Critical Mass will be warmer than fourteen degrees before wind chill, and I hope to see you there.

Lots of sorting done at the Bike Rescue!

A note from Mary Lou:

Thanks to everyone who came in Tuesday and sorted pedals, seats, stems, fenders… Some of the older rusty bikes were put out for the scrap metal pickup. We can now actually walk around the parts room.
